Possible to boot from the internal hard drive?

Postby taking » August 31st, 2012, 5:22 pm

Would it be possible to use the hard drive as a boot device for the Aios Media Center? (The possibility of having more space for apps reduce the possibility of flash wear out etc.)

Thanks,
taking

If I remember correctly that has been asked before and the answer was no in regards to booting from it. Has something to do with when the AIOS actually "sees" the hard drive. However it has been discussed that by using links stuff could be stored on the hard drive. The practicality of doing so, again if I remember correctly, was suspect however.

can't be done .. (there was earlier unsuccessful attempts to pivot root due to instability)
on the other hand real apps should be easily redirected to internal ext3 drive using symlinking.
and flash wear shouldn't be a concern, nowadays flash isn't the first component to go down.

Actually I managed to ware out a bootable flash drive. I have a Pogoplug which used a modified u-boot to boot from the USB. I booted archlinux and ran a Freeswitch server for a couple of months before the file system became corrupt (probably constantly writing logs). I don't think that the flash endurance specifications have changed only that they are using wear leveling algorithms. (I have not read about ipads crapping out due to bad flash)
