Internal HD Help Please..

Postby brianpar1 » August 3rd, 2012, 6:21 pm

I just received my AIOS HD,and seem unable to connect with the internal drive.
I have 2 brand new 1tb,known to be working, formatted in both windows, and with AIOS,when I plug the USB cable in,I get the message turning off aios so can be used on by,so ok I say, then nothing happens on my pc.
I have seen the device manager telling me can't find a driver,or driver is up to date, but doesn't seem to recognize it has an external drive by my pc.
Not showing up in admin tools, disk management either.
I have also turned on samba, and ftp to try to write files to it..
I can pull up the NAT page for the ftp,and Samaba, and can paste files, but device doesn't seem to find them to view.
When accessing the ftp server with windows explorer,I see 2 folders..Lock,and Recovery.
When accessed with IE,I see all the system files, and have browsed the folders, but no idea where to save..
Also, when I go to browse for files or even see the internal hard drive with the aios interface, all I seem to see are networked pc's,or my external usb drives..
I guess, for whatever reason my guess is something is wrong with the internal sata controller as these are mainstream wd 1tb drives..unless I am missing something.
I have hours just trying to use this as an external drive for my pc,and to use the internal hard drive.
Firmware has been upped to the lastest,no change..
I am using known working usb 2.0 ports on my pc,but it is my uderstanding this is supposed to be backwards compatible..
Windows 7 os,I can't imagine anything overlooked,but I do hope so..
Any ideas,much appreciated..:)

ok .. lets take it one step at a time ..
You mentioned the HDDs were formatted by Windows as well as the AIOS.
Does that mean you can see the HDD and play stuff from it using the AIOS (without connecting it to your PC) ?

Hello, and thanks for the help :)
No,I can not see the hdd in AIOS...the external usb drives I have do show up.
First thing I did when I received this was put in a hard drive.
It didn't seem to show,so I removed,formatted it with ntfs,reinstalled the drive.
Still no show...So I tried to format with the AIOS..still no show..
With AIOS,should it show up like or in the same area as my external drives..??
Thanks..

OK, take the HDD out, back to your windows machine and use the storage management to remove all partitions on the HDD, return it to raw and unallocated status, then reinstall it in the AIOS and see if the AIOS would formate it.

And yes, it should show where the USB drives shows.

Can you go to Setup -> Info -> version (or something similar) and see what bootcode version you have on the box.

Also if you aren't on the latest firmware, I would recommend flashing with the latest semiofficial (R20), downloadable from here (remember to do it panic recovery): viewtopic.php?f=6&t=434&p=3425#p3425

Hello,as suggested,I removed the hard drive, removed partitions and reinstalled it into the AIOS..
This time it doesn't format in AIOS at all, where as before,it would say format external drive(the only drive was this internal)..and would act like it was formatiing something..
Step 2..my firmware I already updated to 3.4.3.0..but I will try the firmware R20 as suggested..

Step 3 firmware is upgraded..I must say every version I have loaded sure looks better the the previous..this started at like 2.8 or something like that..all yellow background..
Anyways..still,same problem..does not seem to see any hdd's I put into the internal bay.
Format is not an option as it will not allow me too.
I can feel them spin up and all..just not talking with the system or something..
I was hoping this 3.5" bay was going to work as save some hassle it would..this was an upgrade from a seagate hd theatre..the drive function was one of the main reasons..
I just bought this from amazon..I wonder if I should return it..
I appreciate all your help, and research, work and all
In anycase,I do like this firmware better..Thx..
Regards,
Brian

Have you checked the bootcode ?
How comfortable are you executing commands on the AIOS via telnet ?

Well..with some help,I have no fear..lol
my boot code is usb3.0303.0018
software 3.0.1.7
semiofficial release R20 (awesome)

Everything done so far has been a peace of cake trying to fix this..if there are more ideas,I am
very pleased to try.
I have only had this 1 day,and certainly learning some in's and out's of it..
Even if I can't get the internal drive working..I still do like it.:)
At this point it would be frosting on the cake.
Without an internal hd..would it limit ftp, samba, other functions ??
I would like to try to get this fixed...
Thanks so much for your time...
Regards...

With the HD installed in your aois, telnet to the aios and login the password is root and execute the following commands and post the results.

Code: Select all
~ # df -h

Code: Select all
~ # mount

Actually no, you will get everything using an external HDD as well.
Execute the commands dave posted above and post the results here.

Hi,
Sorry for the late reply..
After messing with the AIOS for a couple more hours, and trying everything reasonable to make the internal hard drive function work,I packaged it up and sent it back..
I have had a few different media players, and it did have some nice features..some did not work for me,or were like pulling teeth,or did not work at all.
The firmware updates were an improvement, but I could do without thumbnailing verses a list of tittles.
And fumbling around linux file systems, and of course the fact it could not detect,or access it's own internal drive was just something I was not going to live with,or spend anymore time with.
Upon pulling the drives out, another factor I was concerned with was there sure doesn't seem to me much cooling for the internal drive.
My drives tried were WD 1tb,and a 2tb,all work perfectly on my windows pc,and are in fact new..
It happens..I was so looking forward to a new player..kinda appreciate my old one better now..lol
Thanks for the tips..
Regards,
Brian
