Update 7/27: sneak peek: XBMC with hw acceleration

Postby zbyte » July 21st, 2012, 6:33 pm

Here is a little sneak peek for all of you who cant wait (like me) to get an xbmc apk with hw acceleration for the XIOS DS. I just compiled the source with davillas pull request to add support for amlplayer, an internal player for hardware accelerated video playback on amlogic based SoCs.

Of course, this build is far from being stable, but alot of stuff allready works. Here some infos about the build:

Default Theme: Confluence
What works:
    hw accelerated video playback
    streaming over samba
    set language in settings
    probably a lot more...
What doesn't work:
    hw accelerated plugin streams
    webdav streaming
    video buffering
backspace key of a connected keyboard (e.g adding a location)
    set location in settings (timezone)
    probably a lot more...

xbmc build log (2012-07-27): http://goo.gl/YgKYC

Please consider helping xbmc developers by reporting what works and what doesn't IN THIS THREAD as detailed as possible, so they can use their time for developing and not for testing! Thats the least we can do for their awesome work!

Btw: I don't take any responsibility if your XIOS will explode, starts talking or does some other strange things ;-)

All credit goes to the xbmc team and especially to davilla for his great work to integrate amlplayer. Have fun ;)

UPDATE: 2012-07-22 Just compiled it again (same download link). This time from xbmc teams git repos as davillas pull request has been merged to it. There are also 2 new commits from davilla which improve stability. As far as i can tell video buffering is still not working, but xbmc no longer crashes when this happens :-)
I also upgraded my free dropbox account to pro, as the public download link generated too much traffic for a free account
Download should now work again.

@davilla:
As you asked: Video streamed over samba just freezes for 1 or 2 seconds and continues playing for a short time, then freezes again (and so on) when wan/lan connection is not fast enough, but xbmc doesn't open the little "buffer" window which shows percentage of video buffer. Also it seems that xbmc does not fill the buffer in such a case which leads to an endless freeze and play loop.
Hope this helps and again: thnx alot for your work on this awesome mediaplayer and of course to the rest of the team :-)

UPDATE: 2012-07-24 Compiled a new build including all new commits since the last build (Jul 22). More infos @

This time i also added a complete log of the build process. Just download it here:

UPDATE: 2012-07-27 Here it is, just in time for the weekend ;- a new compiled build with lots! of changes. Includes all commits since the last build (Jul 24). Just remember: Newer version is not equal to better stability. Stuff will take time. Be warned that this build of xbmc will continuously crash when you use a keyboard, especially when you use the backspace key while adding a new location.

As always: thank you very much team xbmc!
So have fun with it and a nice weekend to all of you :-)

Oh wait this apk is much worst then one available on other forum even without HWA. Now on 95% streams and videos xbmc just crash and go back to Android, and the 5% which are working are worst then then without HWA.

As i told you: video buffering is not working right now which means that when you stream from a wan samba server without a fast internet connection or if you stream from a lan samba server with weak wifi, xbmc will get stuck and crash. Hw acceleration is definitely working. I can stream 1080p mkv with h264 codec without any problems...

On any issues, we need specific details on exactly what you are doing. Bonus points for enough info that allows us to reproduce the error/issue.

Hmm, from you blog entry it seems to me that you still use gingerbread. Maybe thats the reason for your problem. First thing i did was to install ICS so i can't tell if thats the reason but its my best guess. Until now i had no problem with audio. I tried all kind of video containers and codes and it works just fine...
