As a USB controller yes (should work just like it works connected to a PC).
As an IR universal remote ? I don't know, is it just programmable or is it a learning remote ?

Claims to be programmable via learning.

Any USB keyboard/mouse combo should work.
I have been using the Lenovo thumb one (with track ball) and am very satisfied with it.

I am using the succeeding model Lenovo Enhanced Multimedia Remote N5902 (with keyboard backlight) and it works well.

It helps a lot with the setup of the device to have a real keyboard.
