Resolved: New unit - Unresponsive after booting

Postby lousk » September 30th, 2012, 1:20 pm

Since I bought this device over a week ago, I had just turned it on just once to have a look at the main screen and to set up the wifi. So today I decided to tun it on again to start using it and also to upgrade the firmware to ICS.

Well.. to say the least, I was very disappointed.

After I plugged the power supply it seemed to have started to boot fine because I could see the logos on the TV screen while the 1st and 3rd indicator lights were green and the middle was red. Finally after a couple of minutes, the screen displayed what looked like the main screen of the unit, however the remote control / the screen were unresponsive, 5 seconds later the 1rst and 2nd indicator lights turned red, but the 3rd turned blue. The remote control and the screen / menu were still unresponsive. Eventually I had to unplug the power, and decided to try again, and the same thing happened again and again. Then I thought the battery of the remote control was dead. I checked it and it was still new. I even tried to use the sense remote but the same problem - unresponsive.
I already tried to push the reset button at the bottom while plugging the power plug, and it did take me to, like a DOS screen and it did do few things on its own, however again, it prompt me to select something from the menu, but I could not select anything because the screen and the remote were both unresponsive.

Please... your insight would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for reading.

update:
I managed to put ICS img on a USB stick and plugged it in the unit. Pressed the reset button while inserting the power plug. It began installing the image file till about 75% and then it displayed 'random offset 0x8d' and the progress bar got stuck at that point for about 1-2 minute, then it went black screen and rebooted. Now I have a different screen than before the update, all 3 lights are blue, but still the unit / display / remote are unresponsive.

Look at the remote IR led through a cell phone camera and check if you can see the white IR led light blinking.

Yes, it is flashing. But the Sense remote is not.

Sense is not IR its RF.

So since you mention you have Sense, you should be able to navigate the recovery menus with the sense too, what about a USB keyboard ?
By the way, if you have an update.img on the root of the SD the upgrade should start automatically once you enter recovery.

Thanks for pointing out to me about the Sense not being an IR remote.

Now I did plug the Sense USB and made sure I pressed the power button on the remote, unfortunately it did not work either. However when I plugged my USB keyboard as you suggested, I was able to navigate. In regards to updating to ICS, as I mentioned in my edited first post, I was able to do that earlier (it seems) without 100% success towards the end of the upgrade.

At this point, I have no idea what is defective.

OK, so since you can now navigate the recovery menu, can you (without a SD card) enter recovery and clear cache and user data.
Additionally try reflashing again (with a lower speed SD card) the "random offset" message is not an error its just a status message, so ignore that and leave the unti till it automatically reboot.

I did all the steps exactly as you suggested, unfortunately no change. Still both remotes are inoperative.

I find it strange that a USB keyboard would work while the USB Sense didn't.
Any way, I would contact support and get it replaced.
Also if you are still within your retail exchange period I would do it through retail instead.

Thank you for the advice.
The problem is that this retail store has 7 days return policy and 15 days exchange direct product(s) replacement for the same product. However they have 0 stock when I checked. The invoice is dated 09/21/12, I fired it up for the first time during last week, and the second time was yesterday when I discovered it had some issues and began posting here in this great forum.
I was wondering, what is exactly defective, the two remotes + unit, the 2 remotes only, or the unit only?

Thanks again!
